Bovine Brachyspina mutation test available

11-07-2011

Since June 2011, Dr. Van Haeringen Laboratorium B.V. (VHL) has been licensed to perform the Brachyspina mutation test on cattle. The licensing agreement was entered into with universities in Denmark (Copenhagen University) and Belgium (Liège University). This agreement affords VHL the opportunity to offer you the mutation-based DNA test for Brachyspina.

In March 2011, Brachyspina was listed as an Undesirable Recessive Trait by the Holstein Association USA.
The disease results in deformed and stillborn calves. Calves affected by the syndrome display such characteristics as fused vertebrae, a deformed lower jaw, relatively long limbs and reduced body weight.
